Double Happiness: Each half of the symbol is the standard Chinese character for happiness, Therefore, two characters together represents the wish for the two young newlyweds to have happiness together. The double happiness symbol (pronounced "shuang-hsi" in Mandarin) is a special Chinese character used for marital happiness. It’s not used in regular Chinese writing or printing. |

Door Game
Prior to the Wedding Ceremony a door game is played by the bride’s friends with the groom at the bride’s house. The door game originated in ancient time, and the game represents to the groom that that the bride is a lovely girl and her family & friends do not want her to be married away. The groom will be blocked at the bride's door, and her friends will try to stop him from entering by asking questions about the bride, a way to test if he really cares about her. They may also do other tricks to delay the bride's leaving. The groom will try to buy his way in by presenting "Li Shi", token money wrapped in red envelope. The entire "bargain" process is joyous and good-natured.
Tea Ceremony
On the day of the wedding the Happy Couple will serve tea to the parents of the bride and groom and other esteemed wedding guests, in order of seniority. In return, the guests will present the couple with gold jewelry and money in red envelopes.
Wedding Ceremony
The wedding ceremony begins with the groom and his party meeting the bride in her home. Before this day the bride's dowry would have been sent to the boy's house.
Before the meeting party's arrival, the bride would be helped by a respectable old woman to tie up her hair with colourful cotton threads. She would wear a red skirt as Chinese believed red foreshadowed delight, red is considered lucky and joyful.
When the party arrives, the bride, covered by a red head-kerchief, must cry with her mother to show her reluctance to leave home. She is then led or carried by her elder brother to the sedan.
On the arrival of the sedan at the wedding place, there is music and firecrackers. The bride is required to step over a saddle and a brazier/burner to cross the threshold, since the words for "saddle" and "safe" sound the same,and the flame represents a good future life. When the bride’s sedan arrives at the wedding place, the groom will shoot three arrows at the front of the sedan to ward off evil spirits that might joined the long journey from bride’s home to groom’s home.
The bride is then led along a red carpet with festivities all round. The bridegroom, also in a red gown, would kowtow(bow) three times to worship the heaven, parents and spouse. Then the new couple would go to their bridal chamber and guests would be treated to a feast.
During the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom’s hair will be cut and put together in a little bag, symbolizing the binding of their lives. |
